Volunteer writer, Leah Langley, writes a poem based on the theme ‘the outdoors’. I Remember I remember the sun, When I was three. I was playing having fun, And made friends with a bee. I remember the rain, When I was four. It ran to the drain, Leaving puddles on the floor. I remember the wind, When I was five. In its presence, I grinned, I felt so alive. I remember the snow, When I was six. The winter winds blow, Hit me like bricks. I remember the thunder, When I was seven. It filled…
Volunteer writer Sebastian Wieneke details the trials and verdicts of the murders of both Daunte Wright and George Floyd at the hands of police officers. Last week, the trial of Derek Chauvin concluded, with guilty verdicts given for all three of his convictions: second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The trial of the former Minneapolis police officer has been closely watched by the global community, following the massive public outrage in the wake of the murder of George Floyd earlier last year. During the court proceedings, the Defence was accused of putting Floyd’s drug use “on trial”. They suggested…
With a build up of troops along the border between Russia and Ukraine, many fear a possible war between the two. Why is this so, and how have their respective leaders reacted to Ukraine’s accusations? Leah Langley takes a look. Tensions have been rising between Russia and Ukraine since mid-March, with Ukraine and the western governments warning that there are masses of Russian troops moving in on Crimea and the Eastern Ukraine conflict zone. There has been tension between Ukraine and Russia for several years and there have been many developments in their interactions. After the collapse of communism and…
Returning volunteer writer Leah Langley describes the effects of and responses to the eruption of the La Soufrière volcano on Caribbean island Saint Vincent and Grenadines. La Soufrière had been dormant since 1979 but, after growing activity from December, it erupted on April 9th , bringing much destruction to the Caribbean island Saint Vincent and Grenadines. In December, La Soufrière began spouting steam and smoke before making rumbling noises. The activity of the volcano continued to steadily increase before significantly worsening in the lead-up to the eruption. Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves issued an urgent warning on April the 8th, encouraging…
I like Marvel. I enjoy the movies. Though I’ll be honest, I’ve never read the comics, or watched the shorts, and actually haven’t watched all of the movies… so sometimes the storylines take me a second to get my head around if they don’t come with context. Remember when people got excited that Nick Fury pressed his Captain Marvel button at the end of Avengers: Infinity War? I didn’t get that, because the Captain Marvel film hadn’t come out. Admittedly, I like knowing the little things. I enjoy easter eggs and understanding the inside jokes. If I don’t get something,…
Label volunteer, Rebecca Pearson, shares her favourite books she grew up with in light of World Book Day and how book/reading culture has changed over time. The vibrant world of books is often most-celebrated on World Book Day, with schools advocating for their pupils to dress up as a character that they like. It is children’s books which most often pervade our growing lives in wonderful, peculiar and thought-provoking ways. Growing up, the books that we are drawn to change rapidly, and it is often the tales which grab a child’s imagination the most that reach the heights of resounding…
LSU CASH’s Workshop Coordinator and volunteer writer, Megan McKone, helps us understand what endometriosis and PCOS are. Endometriosis and Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are two reproductive diseases, 1 in 10 women in the UK are thought to have PCOS. Endometriosis is the second most common gynaecological condition in the UK with 1 in 10 women suffering from it. It is also possible to have both PCOS and endometriosis. Sex education often neglects to inform us of endometriosis and PCOS, yet so many women suffer from one or both diseases. Endometriosis affects roughly the same number of people that diabetes affects, yet…
This week, the proposed European Super League has caused a whirlwind within football. On Sunday it was announced that 12 teams in Europe, 6 of which play in the English Premier League, would join as founding clubs. However, within 48 hours of the announcement, backlash from all corners of the football community have caused the plans to completely crumble. So what has been said to make the club owners change their minds? FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, spoke out against the league and said that it was “a lot to throw away for maybe the short-term financial gain of some”. UEFA…
After a crazy week in football, Leah Langley, Label volunteer writer, tells exactly what the ‘Super League’ is, or would have been! The Super League was a planned annual club football competition which was set to be contested by twenty European football clubs. It was planned to rival the UEFA Champions League with 12 clubs establishing the league, in April 2021, and a further 3 clubs were anticipated to join. The 15 “founding clubs” would have been permanent participants in the competition, which they were set to govern, and would have included: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham…
With gyms reopening almost a fortnight ago, Label volunteer, Rosa Serret enlightens us on the music that motivates her through a gym session. The 12th of April was a deep sense of relief for all of us, but particularly those that are keen gym-goers. Briefly, I think you should all give yourself so much credit for getting through this winter without the gym. For some of us it’s a lifeline, an escape from the realities of life, a place to feel a sense of belonging. The fact that you (yeah, I’m talking to you) made it through regardless of what…
