Student Living: Loughborough’s Best Budget Shops

Shopping cheaply as a student is not always easy. It is not always clear where to go to get the best deals, and desperately shopping around to find the best deal is often time consuming. To help, Label bring you a breakdown of the best places to go for your different needs.

For food: Iceland and Farm Foods

Not only for frozen pizzas and ready meals as I previously thought, Iceland sells all manner of food items including fresh vegetables, bread, eggs and cereal. And the same goes with Farm Foods. They are the perfect places to buy your staple food items such as ketchup, baked beans and butter but at a much cheaper price. But of course, they are both most famous for their incredibly cheap meat prices. With a kilo of chicken breast for £3.95 how can you say no?

For home ware: Home Bargains and Wilkinsons

For things such as plates, pots and pans and other general home ware, Home Bargains and Wilkinsons are the best places to go. Despite their already cheap prices, Home Bargains often have deals on home ware, and for all the practicing interior designers out there, Wilkinsons have a Colour Match scheme where you can colour code lots of the things you buy. If, like me, you like to accessorise, these two are the best places to go as they also sell fantastic home decorations for very affordable price. Finally, use Wilkinsons for a cheaper source of stationary than WHSmiths.

For a bit of everything: 99p Store and Poundland

Need a new umbrella? Toilet roll? Tea bags? Bike lock? You will find anything and everything here, all for only £1 or less. Everyone I take to either of these places is amazed by the range and scale of items  you can buy. Aside from home bits and bobs I can guarantee you will find a good percentage of your weekly food shop in either of these stores. They are also fantastic for toiletries, which are often the most annoyingly expensive of the things on your list. Why get your Colgate toothpaste from Sainsburys and pay over £2, when you can get the same tube for £1 elsewhere?
