Rahul Mathasing brings us a piece highlighting the important role nature can play in our lives, especially in current circumstances. “The Great Outdoors”. Hyperbole and taken for granted in one lifetime; relief and sorely missed in another. It’s clear to see that you really don’t know what you have until it’s gone; isolation has allowed an entirely new appreciation for nature, the outside world, and the environment to blossom (yes, I did). As with anything there is a spectrum. Some people will be using their allotted time outside to exercise and some will be outside just to get out of…

Label Volunteer Rahul, shares his ‘Letters of the Past’. I am not black. Let’s get that out of the way. I have not faced the same issues of oppression and subjugation. All my perspective is coming from a “person of colour” who identifies as Indian-South African, with Dual British/South African Nationality, and who is a British Citizen – a Third-Culture kid heritage of which I am intensely passionate and immensely proud. Right now though, Black Lives Matter. Disclaimer out of the way. POC. BIPOC. BAME. BME. Why are we a series of non-uniform letters? When I stand up alongside so…

Label volunteer Vanessa Okonji, reflects on the recent events involving the Black Lives Matter movement and police brutality in the US and the UK. Drained. That’s the emotion I have felt since the end of March. With the spreading beast COVID-19 and now the beast that just seems to never disappear, racism. These are two things that have gravely affected the first five months of 2020. Who would have thought they would combine. In the UK, BAME citizens are disproportionately dying from coronavirus due to the disparities faced in this country. Some may say “the virus isn’t racist”, but the…
This evening, the University has announced its plans for the 2020-21 Academic Year to students and staff, which includes a full program of teaching, including face-to-face tuition. Vice Chancellor Bob Allison stated that a teaching timetable will be in place for all degree programmes, with in-person tuition and lab work. However, he warned that large lectures may not be possible on campus once the academic year begins, and that Government guidelines are likely to require online delivery in the first term, supported by the facility to have real-time questions from students to lecturers. The announcement comes after the Government implemented…
Frequent Label volunteer, Meg Jocson Ong, reflects on her experience and thoughts surrounding the enforced lockdown which COVID-19 has imposed upon us in this article. The Low-Down on Lockdown Empty streets, quiet neighbourhoods, messed up sleep schedules – just three of many aspects of 2020’s COVID-19 quarantine situation. I’m writing this on the third week of quarantine, and this my low-down on lockdown. I can’t be the only one who is still in shock from what the past month has brought us. As a final year student, I was focused on drilling down on work alongside spending precious time with…

Facilities across Loughborough have started re-opening after the Government further eased lockdown measures this week. Starting with Loughborough Market on the 28th May, the Borough Council will be permitting a limited number of traders on site (between 12 and 15), selling perishable goods. The market was suspended at the end of March in compliance with the government regulations imposed at the start of the lockdown.
