Loughborough University have confirmed that in-person teaching will move online where possible from the 9th December and that plans are in place for a testing program for all students in the week of 23rd November. The government announced this morning a set of plans that sets out how students will be able to travel home for Christmas. The plans centre around a “student travel window” lasting from 3-9 December, during which time the government expects as many students to return home as possible. The Poppy Appeal has become tradition however, how this is commemorated this year will look slightly different. After a countryside which had an integral part in WWI was thought to be ruined forever, poppies began to engulf the landscape. Students across the country are to be tested en masse to enable them to return home ‘safely’ for Christmas, a report by the BBC finds. In a letter to Vice-Chancellors from the Universities Minister, a week of mass testing is proposed that overlaps with the end of the national lockdown – between the 30th November and the 6th December. Weekly Coronavirus cases have started to decrease for the first time in months, with just 283 more individuals testing positive in Loughborough – down from 474 from the week before. Of the positive cases confirmed last week across Loughborough, just 91 were located in the Loughborough University area, down from 202 the week prior. This sees the town have a case rate of 400 per 100,000 people. Loughborough Students’ Union has announced that the Union Shop, among other facilities, will remain open during the lockdown period. This is following the announcement by the Government on Sunday that England will be returning to a lockdown from Thursday until the 2nd December. As part of the new restrictions, licensed facilities (pubs, restaurants etc.) will have to close and the Socially Distanced Social Club will be cancelled until further notice.
