A Loughborough student who ‘went on holiday’ to Afghanistan has been stuck in the country’s capital as the nation falls apart around him. The Taliban have taken control of the country 20 years after being pushed back by a military coalition led by the US and supported by NATO. Thousands of Loughborough applicants have today received their A-Level results, guaranteeing themselves a place at the top-10 university for the next academic year. In what has been a record year for results, with with 44.8% of students getting A* or A grades, the University has had to cancel any plans to open up clearing or adjustment places due to the number of successful applicants. This is the second year of replacement results, after exams were cancelled once again due to the Coronavirus. A by-election for the vacant Education EO role has been called for the start of September. Thomas Young will no longer take up the position at the end of the month, due to personal reasons. He was elected just two months ago in a nail-biting race with competitor Eleanor Bishop, with just 79 votes between the pair in the final round.
