A Loughborough student who ‘went on holiday’ to Afghanistan has been stuck in the country’s capital as the nation falls apart around him. The Taliban have taken control of the country 20 years after being pushed back by a military coalition led by the US and supported by NATO. A number of cities have been lost over the weekend, including Mazar-i-Sharif and Jalalabad, two traditionally anti-Taliban strongholds to the North and East of Kabul, the capital. Thousands of Loughborough applicants have today received their A-Level results, guaranteeing themselves a place at the top-10 university for the next academic year. In what has been a record year for results, with with 44.8% of students getting A* or A grades, the University has had to cancel any plans to open up clearing or adjustment places due to the number of successful applicants. This is the second year of replacement results, after exams were cancelled once again due to the Coronavirus. A by-election for the vacant Education EO role has been called for the start of September. Thomas Young will no longer take up the position at the end of the month, due to personal reasons. He was elected just two months ago in a nail-biting race with competitor Eleanor Bishop, with just 79 votes between the pair in the final round. He was due to replace former office-holder Ana-Maria Bilciu starting August 2nd. Instead, a by-election has now been called for next month, with the Union looking for a new post-holder. The new LSU Exec Team began their year-long term this morning after a week-long handover period with the previous team ended on Friday. New Union President for 2021-22, Freya Mason, told Label that “I am loving it so far and cannot wait to get started”. Students in higher education could be informed within weeks that they are required to be vaccinated in order to attend University in September, the Foreign Secretary has warned.
