Rebecca Bridger, the Loughborough Students' Union President, will be writing a regular blog for Label Online throughout the entirety of the current academic year. You can contact her by commenting below, writing directly to president@lufbra.net or tweeting @LufbraPresident.

It has been a hectic few weeks, as you can probably tell from the interval since my last post.

David Cox (Action Chair) has had the largest every litter pick Loughborough has ever seen with 386 students getting involved in clearing up in town.

Sarah Musgrave (RAG Chair) is knee deep in preparations for the hosting of the BBC’s Children in Need.

Adam Rae (AU President) has had two really big Big Matches, filmed by LSUTV with Anie (Head of Media) showing off just how well we do Live TV (check it out if you haven’t already).

Pete Childs (VP Democracy and Communications) and Jayde Savage (VP Education) have been busy plugging elections for Union Council and Department Committees.

Whilst all this has been going on and before I headed off to Liverpool for a week on conference. Lucy Padolsey (VP Finance), Jayde, and I had a University Council and Senate away day. Remember my post a few weeks back about Union Council? The University has its own kind of council. Chaired by ‘Sir Bryan Carsberg’, Council is the highest governing body in the University.

Not just concerned with the University though, Council is also responsible for ensuring that as a Students’ Union we operating in a fair and democratic manner and that we are accountable for our finances.

If anything comes up at University Council that is academically based, it has to go to Senate first to be discussed. Jayde and I sit on Senate together, where we discuss things such as quality of courses, changes in degrees and approaches to teaching.

Every three or four years, University Council and Senate have an away day, where the strategy for the University was discussed. With the change in fees, the University away day discussed how the University could analyse how it acts and develops over the upcoming years with a long-term vision rather than just a knee jerk reaction to the change.

With a new market for Higher Education, the strengths of the amazing Student Experience we have here at Loughborough and the benefits we provide students are going to become a huge focus for the University in response to the new markets they will be facing.

But do not worry; there was a huge emphasis not only on the acquisition of future students, but also on ensuring that there is good quality teaching and learning for current students.
