Three Loughborough athletes have won medals at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Istanbul, following their contributions in the 4x400m relay events.
Nicola Sanders, who graduated from Loughborough University in 2003 with a degree in Sport and Exercise Science, helped the British women’s team to a gold medal.
The team of Shana Cox, Nicola Sanders, Christine Ohuruogu and Perri Shakes Drayton put in an amazing gold medal-winning performance to break the traditional USA and Russian dominance of this event.
The girls pulled together an inspirational display to ensure got the better of their opponents to finish in 3.28.76, ahead of the USA with 3:28.79.
In the men’s event Loughborough based athletes Michael Bingham and Richard Buck, alongside Conrad Williams and Nigel Levine, looked to be heading for a gold medal upset ahead of the much favoured USA, but had to settle for silver in what was still a very impressive relay performance.
It was still the second fastest time ever for the GB squad in an indoor 4x400m race, and a welcome silver medal that took the Aviva GB & NI medal count of nine.
At the World Indoor Throwing event in Vaxjo, Loughborough University graduate and Paralympian Dan Greaves recorded a new indoor World Record of 57.56m for the F44 discus.
"I've had such great week training with the group out here and the Olympic champion, and it really paid off," said Dan, who believes, that he has a 60m plus throw in him.
Greaves has also been awarded the honour of carrying the Olympic Torch through campus on day 46 of the Olympic Torch Relay on Tuesday July 3.
