An Easter of Sport
As we all head home over the following few days for our much awaited Easter break, many of us will be collecting our library books, printing out our coursework questions, and packing our folders for an Easter of dreaded revision. If this is you, or you know this SHOULD be you then you’re going to be needing a fair bit of procrastination material in order for you to remain sane these Easter holidays. What better way to distract you over the holiday period than to provide you with a list of sporting events to fit within, or consume your days – you’ll thank me later…or possibly not.
Loughborough Sport
Loughborough Lightning face Team Northumbria this evening at 7:30pm in the Sir David Wallace Sports Hall, tickets are still available for you to purchase online. The coverage for the event will be provided by Sky Sports so if you can’t come along to the event then watch it online or at home! Our Loughborough Rugby Union boys are heading to Twickenham today to face Leeds Beckett in the BUCS Championship Final. Loughborough have a large crowd of spectators travelling down to support the boys for the big day but if you missed out on the opportunity then fear not as our Label Sports Editor Liz Tyler will be at the game keeping you updated on our Twitter feed @LSUMediaSport & @LufbraRugby
If you’re sticking around for the weekend then there are plenty of fixtures to watch on Saturday, with both Hockey Men’s 2s & 4s competing in the MRHA Central/ 2nd Team League Midlands Premier. The Men’s 4s are on Waterbase at 12:30 facing Northampton Saints, following this the Men’s 2s are on at 2pm also up against the men from Northampton Saints. Along with Hockey, our Men’s Basketball 1s face Eastside Eagles at 4:30pm in Sir David Wallace Sports Hall for the England Basketball Division 2, students can watch for free so head on down to the Sports Hall to cheer on our men’s basketball!
On Sunday our Futsal Men’s 1s are up against Manchester in their second match within the FA National Futsal Super League. The match kicks off at 4pm in Sir David Wallace Sports Hall, so for those heading to Echoes it gives you time to soften the hangovers and stroll on down! Their second fixture at Loughborough is on 19th April at 5pm in Sir David Wallace Sports Hall against Baltic.
Over the Easter holidays the sport continues on campus for Loughborough, and with cricket season getting under way Loughborough have a couple of fixtures lined up with the MCCU’s first friendly being played against Leicestershire CCC on the Haselgrave Cricket Pitch, March 30th at 11am. Loughborough Mens Football 1s continue the Midlands Football League Premier Division over the Easter period with their first fixture up against Quorn in the Loughborough Stadium at 7:45pm, on April 6th. The lads are also facing AFC Wulfrunians on 18th April at the stadium with kick off at 3pm.
Coming to the end of their season, the Loughborough Rugby union National 1 boys face Darlington Mowden on 11th April at 2pm of who are currently one place above them in the table as Loughborough sit comfortably in 10th. The final home game for our boys is on Saturday 25th April at 2pm against the current leaders of the table Ealing Trailfinders. If you’re travelling back early from your Easter break head on down to support!
After a great BUCS season for Loughborough Women’s Hockey 3s, they play Leicester 3s on 18th April at Waterbase at 10:30am in Leicestershire Women’s Hockey League Premier Division.
For those that will be venturing home for the Easter break there is plenty of non-Loughborough sport going on of which is televised or streamed for your benefit…
Cricket World Cup Final
This Sunday 29th March sees the ICC Cricket World Cup Final of Australia vs New Zealand in Melbourne starting at 2:30pm Australian time, televised live on Sky Sports from 2:55am UK time. This rivalry is bound to produce an incredible display of talent and I’m sure there will be a lot of us leaving our Saturday night out early to go home and catch the start of the Final!
Formula 1
Also on 29th March, Formula One returns in Malaysia in the Malaysian Grand Prix, Kuala Lumpur. The race will be televised on BBC, and with Lewis Hamilton currently in poll position it’s looking hopeful for the Brit heading into the Malaysian Grand Prix.
Football
With lots of Football on the TV over the Easter break there is many an opportunity to remain updated on the league , cup and trophy matches on Sky, BBC, BT and many more media outputs. Tennis
The Miami Open is currently happening within the Unites States, a hard court ATP & WTA tournament between 24th March – 5th April of which sees our very own Heather Watson having progressed to the second round after defeating Russian player Rodina Evgeniya. Rugby
After an incredible Six Nations there is still plenty of Rugby to watch in preparation for the Rugby World Cup in September. With the Aviva Premiership, European Champions Cup, European Challenge Cup, Pro 12 and other Rugby League’s being televised during the Easter period there are many fixtures you can attend or watch that will keep you sane during the revision onslaught and keep you hooked upon the sport – no post six nations come down for us rugby lovers.
Athletics
As the outdoor athletic season gets underway, the IAAF World Cross Country Championships 2015 are being held this year on March 28th in Guiyang, China. The BBC are covering the event of which will be live on the Red Button between 4-7:30am with highlights of the race being broadcasted on BBC2 later within the day. However, the greatest Athletic event within the UK this Easter is on the 26th of April when we welcome people from afar for the annual Virgin Money London Marathon. The marathon will be televised on BBC One on the day, good luck to those of you that are running the marathon, tweet us with your times and pre/post race selfies to @LSUMediaSport!
Horse Racing
Crabbies Grand National starts on the 9th April – 11th April in Aintree, Liverpool. This prestigious race brings big names to the Northern City and to our tele screens, so get your bets ready, do your research and hopefully win a pound or two.
Rowing
On 11th April the annual BNY Mellon Boat Race is back and Cambridge are looking to maintain their lead above Oxford University. This has always been an extremely popular event and if you’re in London on the Saturday afternoon between 4.50pm & 5.50pm I would definitely recommend that you venture down to Putney Bridge and along the Embankment to get a live view of the race itself. However if you are alike me and cannot attend the event even though you would absolutely love to then it will be broadcast on BBC along with online streams from various media outlets.
As you can see there is plenty of sport to keep your life and mind balanced within the month that we have off, make sure you catch a couple of these events! Good luck with the revision and coursework, it will all be over before you know it so make the most of student life – you’ll realise how much you miss it when you enter into the world of work!
