LSU has announced that they will be transferring the ownership of the Campus Nursery to the University due to ‘financial’ reasons, following approval from the Board of Trustees. Until last week, LSU had provided 102 places in its Campus Nursery (situated just behind the SU) for children 0-5 years – aimed at the children of students, University staff and the local community. The Nursery had been operating as part of the Students’ Union for over 35 years, with full-time staff and volunteers from LSU Action. Loughborough is one of 11 UK universities to have suffered a data breach after hackers gained access to a third party computing services provider. Blackbaud is a provider of financial and fundraising systems to non-profits and higher education institutes worldwide and in May 2020 a hacker was able to gain access to their systems and take a copy of some data stored on their servers. The attack sought to raise funds by committing a ‘ransomware’ attack whereby sensitive information is withheld from an organisation until a ransom has been paid. Last night (17th July), the Loughborough Family joined together to celebrate the very best of the University community. Yesterday (16th July 2020) the Government released a strategy plan for the restructuring of Higher Education in response to Covid-19. Within this strategy, the government encourage Higher Education institutions to “strip back bureacracy”, and state that “The funding of student unions should be proportionate and focused on serving the needs of the wider student population” adding that they should be funded according to this rather than “subsidising niche activism and campaigns.” This has been interpreted on Twitter by some as an attack on Students’ Unions on part of the Government. Tonight, Loughborough University have been awarded three WhatUni Student Choice Awards including Best Societies & Sports, Best University Facilities, and the prestigious University of the Year.
