Last night (17th July), the Loughborough Family joined together to celebrate the very best of the University community. In its first virtual ceremony since the awards’ inception in 2005, the LEAs aimed to recognise and reward the students who put tremendous effort into the Loughborough experience throughout their time in the East Midlands – giving something back to the students who invest their time in both the the University and Students’ Union. Yesterday (16th July 2020) the Government released a strategy plan for the restructuring of Higher Education in response to Covid-19. Within this strategy, the government encourage Higher Education institutions to “strip back bureacracy”, and state that “The funding of student unions should be proportionate and focused on serving the needs of the wider student population” adding that they should be funded according to this rather than “subsidising niche activism and campaigns.” This has been interpreted on Twitter by some as an attack on Students’ Unions on part of the Government. Tonight, Loughborough University have been awarded three WhatUni Student Choice Awards including Best Societies & Sports, Best University Facilities, and the prestigious University of the Year. WhatUni said that “students at this university felt they had been given one of the best university experiences. New financial accounts reported by LSU to the Charity Commission this quarter report that the Students’ Union spent a total of £294,004 on a review of its organisational structure to “reduce its overall cost base” and “reorientate its staff team” during the 2018-2019 financial year. The expenditure comes at a time of increased financial strain on the union, which is still reeling from being forced to cut a deficit of over £2.8 million in the 2017-18 financial year to one which now just stands at just under £250,000. Union President Salomé Doré tonight presented the first ever ‘Loughborough Recognition Awards’, a one-off online event to celebrate the fantastic work of LSU’s Sections over the past academic year.
