Label volunteer, Jonah Loughlin, reflects upon Kanye West’s album, Jesus Is King, prior to its one-year anniversary of being released tomorrow. Since The Life of Pablo (or arguably as early as Yeezus), Kanye has cultivated an aura of spontaneity around his music. TLOP’s post-release patches and ye’s last-minute changes serve as interesting lore for keen fans. With these projects, listeners eventually received polished works that provide the unique sonics and direction that only Kanye can bring to music. This isn’t the case with Jesus Is King as Kanye pushes the aesthetic of spontaneity too far and the album suffers for…

In my first President’s blog, I wrote about the importance of maintaining a sense of community at Loughborough, despite the circumstances. This is something that LSU has a big role in facilitating, now more than ever. The range of activities we provide, together with our reputation for being one of the largest entertainment venues in the East Midlands, meant we entered Freshers with a degree of trepidation. Gone were the days when we could measure success on the number of people we could get in our venue each night. Instead, we had to adapt our commercial model to ensure we…

Weekly Coronavirus cases have increased at a slower rate this week in Loughborough, with 284 more individuals testing positive in Loughborough – up 16 from the week before. Of the positive cases confirmed last week across Loughborough, 128 were located in the Loughborough University area which covers campus accommodation, William Morris Hall and the Old Ashby Road area. This is up 17 cases compared to the previous week, and means the Loughborough University area has the 11th highest number of cases in England, leading the Council’s Director of Public Health to warn the district ‘could move into Tier 2’. The University has separately reported…
In this piece, News Editor Izzie Naish argues for the diversification of the current English Literature curriculum. It’s a shame that in school we’re only really taught literature written by white men. As an English Literature student, I’ve studied the subject throughout my entire education, yet it was only once I got to university that I ever studied authors from a diverse range of backgrounds. At school, the emphasis was always on authors such as Shakespeare, Keats, or Byron. All brilliant authors, but all white men. Occasionally we read a book written by a woman: one of the Brontë sisters,…
Volunteer writer, Livia Watts, details the cataclysmic effects Covid-19 has had on the country of Yemen. 2020 has not been short of problems. There is doubt as to whether anyone would have predicted that a global pandemic would dominate the agenda at the turn of the decade. COVID-19 has hailed a fundamental change in the way many carry out their everyday lives. Things we once would have taken for granted; we now crave. Whether that be celebrating a birthday with friends, visiting grandparents, going on a holiday or even something as simple as going to the supermarket. While it is…
