Last week Label interviewed Sarah Haar; a Loughborough University finalist and former Action Rep for Cayley Hall, who is running for Action Chair in this year’s Exec Elections. She is running against Michael Jordan for the position. Although Sarah was nervous, her answers showed her passion for the role and willingness to take on the challenge of Action Chair. Here are her answers to our Big Five Questions:
- What are the main reasons behind you running for Action Chair?
“Firstly, I absolutely love the section! I have been involved with Action since I was a fresher and watched the section grow over the last few years. I have been working really closely with Billy recently, since being hall rep co-ordinator and I have been able to see the areas that need improving. Billy has worked lot with rebranding the section this year, but the reason I want to be Action Chair is I think it is about time we started bringing Action to the students. A lot of students think Action is just about the A-teams but not a lot know about the other projects; equality projects, sports projects and overseas projects for example. The reason I want to be chair is to make that more accessible to students, because I didn’t know in my first year that Action offered that, it was only later on that I realised what Action had to offer and it was incredible, so I want to show students what Action is about and make it more accessible to students.”
- What do you think of the current Action chair, Billy Marsh, and is there anything you would plan to do differently if you were in that position next year?
“I have really enjoyed working with Billy this year, I think he does a great job. I am looking to build on what he has done already and use what previous Action Chairs have done to continue their hard work. Billy has rebranded the section mainly this year, making action look better, more appealing to students and the office more comfortable. Now he has done that I think its time I used my skills as a team player to link all sections together and actually use everyone’s advantages to make action excel. I now want to expand the section and bring Action to everyone.”
- What is your one main manifesto point?
“My one main one is to keep making Action accessible to students; not just students in Halls, but also the college students and students in town. Things such as media coverage all comes under this main point of making it accessible; the Action website is hard to use and not update regularly, people get confused about signing up for free projects, its not clear. For example the college students couldn’t sign up because their ID number weren’t working, so redoing the whole website to make it easier for students to get involved. Also holding Action road shows to bring Action to the students in places like James France, EHB and Halls. I think a newsletter which town students can sign up to will make it more accessible to everyone.”
- Why should students vote for you to be the next Action Chair over anyone else in Loughborough?
“Just because I have so much to give I think, I really love Action, I love everything its about and I think I have got what it takes to really help Action blossom in a way it hasn’t yet. Action has been developing over the years and it’s a fantastic section. When I first thought about going for the role, I thought ‘how can Action change?’; ‘Action is great the way it is’ and the more I have worked with Action I have seen that there is so much that people don’t know about it so people should vote for me because I will hopefully be able to show them why Action is so great because a lot of people think Action is just about gardening. It is a lot more than that, just give me one minute to explain and I’ll be able to tell you all about what Action has to offer. So I think people should vote for me because I am so passionate, although I hate that word, about the section and hopefully students will see that.”
- In one sentence, can you sum up what you think the role of Action Chair involves?
“Action chair is being able to show students that Action speaks louder than words.”
