Last week, Label interviewed Michael Jordan, a Loughborough University finalist and the current Vice Chair of Loughborough Students Action. Jordan is running against Sarah Haar for the position of Action Chair. He was quietly confident and appeared well prepared for what he had to say:
1. What are the main reasons behind you running for Action Chair?
“I think probably the main reason is I’ve been involved with Action for the last three years at university and I think my experience and knowledge of the section, being a hall rep, a project leader (that won a team of the year prize) and a Vice Chair leads me perfectly to the position really.”
2. What do you think of the current Action Chair, Billy Marsh, and is there anything you would plan to do differently if you were in that position next year?
“I think he’s doing a great job so far. He’s really stepped up Action and made it more professional. I think the success of Action over the past few years has been based on gradual progression and something that I definitely want to continue. There are a few things that I’d like to change. First of all, from the hall reps point of view, I want to introduce technology to Action with a new swipe card registration system to speed up volunteering and make it easier. I want to improve the employability skills of students, create projects that really enhance the skills of student and not just make volunteering fun.”
3. What is your one main manifesto point?
“Yeah that is my first and main manifesto point is to establish projects that improve student’s employability skills and I think it’s the most important thing that we can offer students, because the Student Union should be there as a service to students so yeah I think that’ll help out a lot.”
4. Why should students vote for you to be the next Action Chair over anyone else in Loughborough?
“I think my experience is second to none in the section. I think I come with a lot of knowledge of like, how it can be expanded upon, but obviously competition is going to make me strive to do better.”
5. In one sentence, can you sum up what you think the role of Action Chair involves?
“No matter who wants to volunteer, what they want to do, or where they want to do it, I think that Action should be there to offer them a helping hand and point them in the right direction for volunteering.”
