What an absolute farce. Council Chair, James Carroll, told me this evening after his meeting was cancelled: “this is democracy in action”. I’m not quite sure what to say to that.
Carroll has been under a lot of pressure in recent weeks and has stood up to criticism extremely well. It even looks as if the threat of a vote of no confidence has passed. Whereas last time around poor organisation was to blame, tonight he was not at fault, but the fact Union Council had to be cancelled for a second consecutive time signifies a dangerous downturn in the quality of Loughborough democracy; a downturn that Jamie Morgado highlighted in my comment piece yesterday.
What happens now? Who knows, but Pete Childs and Carroll need to get their thinking caps on. The Executive Elections candidates pack must be passed by Council four weeks before the launch date, so swift action must be taken in the New Year to avoid even more embarrassment for the Union’s power-men.
