As we look forward to the return of spring, we look forward to fewer layers, tights-less outfits and open toe shoes, and this year, like every other, we look forward to the return of the floral prints. Elle magazine have anticipated a strong variety of floral prints for Spring/Summer fashion Week 2013. The use of floral patterns and prints for spring may be ironic, but it only seems appropriate for a familiar print to be reinvented and to be welcomed back into our lives each year.

I think the floral print remains a fashion favourite because it is pretty, girlie, feminine and so easy to wear. With prints, especially floral, it doesn’t have to be full head-to-toe. It can be much more subtle teaming plain pieces with one bold block of floral. Don’t be scared to experiment with colours and add accessories to compliment the floral print.

Here are a few ideas and combinations to try, check out the gallery to see examples:

  1. Use the floral in a cute skater dress, then dress it down with black tights and a pair of flat, black doc martins (dress: ASOS, chelsea boots: ASOS).
  2. Use an understated floral dress (with black background) and team with bare legs and black Chelsea boots for a casual day/night look (dress: Topshop).
  3. Try a floral blazer with a plain white top, jeans and a coloured heel. (blazer: Zara, shoes: Primark).
