Room 1 erupted last month as Sam and the Womp belted out one of the biggest tunes of the summer, “Bom Bom” during their gig at the Student’s Union. The three piece pop-electronic band found stardom as their debut single released in August 2012 went straight to the top of the charts. Now, a few months later Label Music got the opportunity to ask Sam, Aaron and Lady Oo some questions about their current tour and future plans:
How did you enjoy performing at Loughborough University's Student's Union earlier last month?
It was one of our favourite gigs of the student tour! We were treated very well by the staff and the night was packed full of raving partygoers! They all got WOMPING with us massively.
What/who are your major musical influences?
We have a broad spectrum of influences from The Skatalites to Knife Party, Goran Bregovic to Roots Manuva, Tom Waits to Will Smith, Louis Armstrong to Dizzee Rascal!
When you first released "Bom Bom" did you have any idea it would be so successful?
We hoped so but we never thought it would be such an instant smash! We had great responses when playing live with our full seven-piece band at the summer festivals before it was released.
Have you got any advice for student bands just starting up?
Stay live and real! Be persistent and don't take yourselves so seriously – remember to have fun and involve the audience as much as possible.
What are your plans for the upcoming months/year?
We are in the middle of our UK tour and then off to Australia for New Year. Our second single is out soon… And will definitely keep on writing music as much as possible.
What songs or bands would be on your top played playlist?
We're loving Flosstradamus and Major Lazer right now!
