Loughborough witnessed a close game yesterday with the men’s 1st team volleyball defeating Cambridge in a thrilling three sets to one victory. They headed for a rocky start, giving the first set away; but a quick change in tactics where Vatas had stepped up as the setter, replacing a solid performance from Ngo in the second set brought Loughborough back to its lead in the point by point chase.

It was 24 all towards the end of the second set, and the atmosphere became tense. Both teams knew that whoever took the set would then use that momentum towards the next one, and maybe even take the game. It was risky. With some focus under pressure, the men pulled through ending a thrilling last few points at 27-25. Leaving Cambridge with only doubt on whether they could come back from this…

And so the momentum was utilised. The third set started with a heat as Banwell smashed one hit after the other straight at the Cambridge defenders. There was no hope in sight. Defense was strong both on the net with Lang and He dominating the blocks, Beerman and Evans breaking the Cambridge hits one after the other and Chong taking over the tip cover. There was no way around Loughborough.

A clean sweep followed on the fourth set, and Cambridge had lost hope and just could not find it in them to present a challenge. There wasn’t much left to say at this point than… A solid three sets to one victory was sealed. This is Loughborough, thanks for coming…
