The persistent DDoS, caused when multiple systems flood the bandwidth, resulted in many lost connections at universities across the country. Students have been struggling to connect to servers especially when trying to access on campus. Almost all online resources associated with the university appear to be affected in some way. Services affected at this point include Snapchat and Yik Yak as well as University websites, and our very own media website for some.
After initial attempts to block the attacks proved unsuccessful, the network were forced to abandon updating their twitter page as it was believed that this was where the attackers were getting their information.
Jisc, the UK providers for higher education networks and technology resources, are updating their twitter on a regular basis to keep us up to date. In their most recent statement they said:
“On Monday 7 December at 9.24 a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack caused unplanned disruption on the Janet network. This has resulted in a potentially intermittent service for all customers. Our network and computer security incident response teams are currently working to resolve the problem. Customers affected have been contacted and are being provided with up to date information.”
Loughborough are keeping us up to date via the IT services announcements page, ironically, as many students are going to struggle to see this on campus anyway. The Jisc website is down to, although their tweets are currently updating affected students.
As of 1:30pm, Jisc are still experiencing difficulties, with a “traffic spike” linked to the East Midlands. Services are still at risk and failing to work in many circumstances. There is no predicted ETA for the problem to be fixed at this stage “due to the nature of the outage”.
#TT169600 – Traffic spike indicated in the East Midlands. Services remain at risk.
