Monday, December 2nd will see Cognito’s at Loughborough’s Student Union play host to Speech Bubble. Now in its third successful year, the spoken word event, Speech Bubble sees the mix of an open-mic set for students, members of the audience and very enjoyable sets from professional spoken word artists.
This year will see a few high-profile professionals show off their talents including Jess Green and Polarbear. At the tender age of twenty-four, Jess has achieved many accolades that are impressive for someone twice her age. The Leicester-based poet has travelled the country, spreading her love and talent for poetry. Also, she regularly runs poetry nights in her hometown known as ‘Find The Right Words.’
Although currently based in London, Steven Camben (a.k.a. Polarbear) is from Birmingham, born and raised. He has spoken on a numerous stages, including Glastonbury back in 2005 yet humbly claims that he is merely “alright at it.” Since then, Polarbear has written and toured four theatrical monologues, and even performed in California. His first young adult novel ‘TAPE,’ is due to be out in January 2014 at HarperCollins. If I were you, I would reserve a copy before they sell out.
The annual Speech Bubble is a culture event not to be missed. With a cool, laidback atmosphere, cabaret style seating, and talents Jess Green and Polarbear headlining, the event will be a hot ticket. Cognito’s bar will be open throughout the night for refreshments, providing a touch of ‘encouragement’ to any students or members of the public that are thinking of taking to the stage themselves.
Doors open at 7pm, with acoustic performer Abigail Kwakye indulging ears with her dulcet tones, after which the event will get under way. Spaces are limited and selling out fast at £3 for the public and free for students (don’t forget to bring your ID). If you wish to make any reservations, contact Liam Peoples on firstname.lastname@example.org. There will be tickets available on the door but it is advised to reserve and avoid disappointment.
