Returning volunteer Leah Langley discusses the impact of social media in the sporting world. Social media is shifting the way that athletes and fans are interacting with each other. The interactive and friendly nature of social media makes them idyllic platforms to fuel people’s sporting desires and needs. Whilst it is enabling fans to become more engaged with athletes, it is also forcing sporting professionals to be more liable for the comments they make on public platforms. Originally social media was seen as a positive thing for the sporting world as it was a way for clubs and athletes…

One of our Heads of Social, Emma Ames, gives her review of the Fyre Festival scandal. With the release of two big documentaries on Netflix and the exclusively-American TV company Hulu, the Fyre Festival has made yet another splash as we learn what led the ‘greatest new music event of the decade’ to become a catastrophic weekend for everyone involved. When the Fyre Festival disaster first hit the news in 2017, I seemed to miss all of the drama. So, watching the Netflix documentary is actually the first instance in which I became aware of the event. My first reaction…

Returning Label volunteer Leah Langley brings you a review of Tom Walker’s debut album. Tom Walker started his year off winning Best British Breakthrough at this years Brit Awards, before releasing his much-awaited debut album; What a Time to Be Alive. The writing and lyricism of this album asserts Walker’s talent in the face of adversity and indifference. His voice has become known for its variations as it sounds prematurely aged and growly making him highly distinctive compared to other current chart-toppers. The album boasts 13 tracks, which mix slow instrumentals with elevated vocals and help create a uniquely brilliant…

Returning volunteer, Ada Ughanwa shares what made her decide to choose Loughborough University!  When you do your research into Loughborough you just find images of a small market town that has lots of old people in it, however, this is the smaller picture and Loughborough has a lot more to offer. Despite Loughborough not being my first-choice university, coming to the open day changed my mind quickly! Fields of grass, good sun, and a swimming pool won me over. I chose Loughborough in the end because it was top ten in the UK- now number seven in most university rankings! It was…

Returning volunteer Meg Jocson-Ong talks about her experience with AU Polo. AU Polo is one of the smaller teams in Loughborough in my opinion, but I don’t know a group more like a family than these riders. A game with the reputation of being a “posh sport” tends to be overlooked and misunderstood by those who don’t really understand it. Working in teams of 3-4 riders, the objective of the game is to score a goal between two posts (outdoor) or on a black board (indoor) while completing ride-offs (our version of tackling) and penalty shots if needed. We…

Returning volunteer, Leah Langley explores her passion for her involvement in Action. Action is the community volunteering section of the Loughborough Student’s Union. It offers hundreds of volunteering projects throughout the year that help different members of the community. The range of activities that you can become involved in are vast and can help all members of the community from the young to the elderly. I got involved with Action in October 2017 during my first year of University and it’s become a huge part of my life ever since. I started out volunteering at the weekly A-Team projects,…

Label News Editor, Izzy Brann, reviews the Victoria & Albert Museum’s Dior Exhibition. From 1947 to the present day, the Dior: Designer of Dreams exhibition at London’s V&A explores the influence and career of Christian Dior himself, and his successors, with the fashion house that changed couture. I have always admired Dior, especially since Maria Chiuri Grazia took centre stage as creative director in 2015, with her iconic ‘We Should All Be Feminists’ t-shirt. The classic silhouettes, the ethical awareness and the timeless attention to detail, should be admired by all. The exhibition provided an opportunity for such admiration without…

Returning volunteer writer, Meg Jocson Ong, shares how where she grew up influenced her life and who she is today. My time in the Philippines was cut off too short when my dad was expatriated to Malaysia. I’ve never cried so much until I was in the car to the airport – driving through this bustling city I call home. Manila has a special place in my heart, and although I moved out when I was 12, I can confidently say that it has influenced how I live my life greatly and is a major factor to who I am…
