Artemis Fowl fails to deliver the magic of the books. After the success of the Mandolorian at the launch of Disney + I was excited to hear that my childhood favourite book, Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer, was made into a film and put exclusively onto the platform. I was excited until I was roughly 10 minutes into the film. We are introduced to the plot by Mulch Diggums (Josh Gad) being arrested in Ireland and then taken into custody by MI6 (which I have put down to a misunderstanding of the difference between the UK and the ROI). The…

In a statement to Parliament, the Prime Minister has announced significant changes to the lockdown measures put in place at the end of March. From the 4th July, the recommendation from the Government is to remain 1 metre apart where necessary, although 2 metres is still recommended when possible. Mr Johnson called this “1 metre plus”. This is part of a gradual phased reduction to the lockdown which has now become guidance rather than law. In his statement, Mr Johnson also outlined other measures being reduced on the 4th July. Meetings of two households can take place inside as long…

Today, Loughborough Students’ Union has announced that they have ended furlough payments to Student Staff as of June 30th, with Student Staff who would normally have continued to work over the summer not receiving paychecks over the holiday period. The Students’ Union put all Student Staff onto the Job Retention Scheme at the end of March, and despite ending the scheme now, have made no indication that students will be brought back to work over summer, possibly leaving some students who rely on the scheme in financial limbo. In a statement sent to all Student Staff by Director of Marketing…

Returning Media Volunteer, Meg Jocson Ong, shares a beautiful letter to her future self about the uncertain future. Dear Future Me, I hope you’re doing well. Hopefully, the coronavirus is on its last chapter and life feels somewhat normal again. I hope it gets better than how it is right now. You’re used to things falling into place somehow but now it’s different. Not knowing when you’re going back to England is saddening and as someone who enjoys scheduling everything in advance, not having a solid plan for the foreseeable future frightens me. The question that gets me thinking a…

Volunteer, Paul Thompson, takes a look at the success of cinema at home. Who’d have thought an animated Justin Timberlake film could spell the end for the cinema industry? The highly anticipated Trolls sequel – Trolls: World Tour – was expected to be released in cinemas over Easter 2020. Although it did open in a limited number of cinemas, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Universal studios made the decision to also release it for digital rental the same day. And, according to NBCUniversal’s CEO Jeff Shell, this was a financial success and may be the future of film releases. The…

Returning volunteer, Katrina Sweeney, shares what she will do when lockdown is finally lifted.  During the current difficult times looking towards the future can be hard. It may feel as though there is no immediate end in sight – but it can be helpful to create plans and remind ourselves that this WILL end! So, it is important to have things to look forward too for when lockdown is completely lifted, and life can go back to the way it was – or hopefully even better. This has led to me considering my own quarantine bucket list of what I want…

Returning Label volunteer, Chloë Morgan, shares the important life lessons she has learnt in self-isolation. Baking, running, writing, drawing… The list goes on. However, if you want to hear about all the new skills you should have learned during lockdown, you’ve come to the wrong place. Because, in reality, we’re in a pandemic. In reality, people are dying. And when people are dying, learning new skills is not at the top of our priorities. So, rather than me telling you about how I am the next Mary Berry, Mo Farah, J.K. Rowling or Van Gogh – or all three rolled into…

Label’s Head of Social Media, Leah Langley, shares the shocking truths behind sexism in education. Sexism is a prevalent issue throughout the whole of today’s society, but a ground-breaking 2019/20 report by UK Feminista and the National Education Union has revealed the shocking statistics surrounding sexism in education. Sexual harassment is rife in schools and appears to be heavily gendered with boys targeting girls. 37% of females at mixed-sex schools expressed that they experienced some form of sexual harassment whilst at school compared to 6% of males. 24% of female students have been subjected to unwanted physical touching of a…

Rahul Mathasing brings us a piece highlighting the important role nature can play in our lives, especially in current circumstances. “The Great Outdoors”. Hyperbole and taken for granted in one lifetime; relief and sorely missed in another. It’s clear to see that you really don’t know what you have until it’s gone; isolation has allowed an entirely new appreciation for nature, the outside world, and the environment to blossom (yes, I did). As with anything there is a spectrum. Some people will be using their allotted time outside to exercise and some will be outside just to get out of…
