Politics Editor Connor Wade summarises the attitudes towards LGBT members of society in British politics in the past 40 years and how they have changed. This month sees the celebration of LGBT History Month – celebrated in February in the UK because the first steps to repealing Section 28 were achieved in February of 2003. While I would hope that very few people remain today that consider the way that LGBT people live their lives a moral and political issue and not just a freedom and right that should be afforded to all, the actions of key figures in politics…
Volunteer writer, Leah Langley, tells us why LGBT+ History Month is so important to commemorate. February marks the beginning of LGBT+ History Month which is an annual month-long event recognising lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history. It was founded by Rodney Wilson in 1994 and observes the history of the gay rights and civil rights movements. It is recognised by many countries celebrating at different points of the year. The United States, Canada, and Australia celebrate it in October also encompassing National Coming Out Day (October 11th) and commemorates the LGBT right marches that took place in Washington in 1979…
Label’s Head of Design, Christos Leo Alamaniotis, gives us an account on Olivia Rodrigo’s chart-topping single, ‘drivers license’, and her success, with the help of TikTok. Olivia Rodrigo tops current charts with her debut single ‘drivers license’, but what brings it success? Slow, rolling piano chords draw a greater focus onto Rodrigo’s vocal style, creating an emotive atmosphere that would not feel out of place in a coming-of-age film soundtrack. Whilst the song may not be technically advanced, it sees its success in its accessibility, through its reach across TikTok. The app’s younger age demographic is well suited to this…
Volunteer writer, Olivia Tarr, talks about the effect online shopping is having on the high street. Can you remember the last time you walked into a store, tried on your carefully chosen collection of items and joyfully purchased the ones that did in fact fit? It feels like a blissful memory when compared to the awkward size guidelines, guess-work measurements and heavily photoshopped images that prevail in the world of online shopping. At the start of the month, online retail giant Asos swept up Topshop and Miss Selfridge brands for £330 million. No agreement was made to buy any of…

In this feature, Label News Editor Izzie Naish highlights the impact of transgender individuals and people of colour in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights through recounting the lives of Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. February is LGBTQ+ History Month, and so we should remember some of the important figures who have had a massive impact on the ongoing movement for the equality of the LGBTQ+ community within society. Sometime this year, a monument of two of the most influential activists within the movement will be unveiled in New York City – these two activists being Marsha P. Johnson and…
Label volunteer, Louise Peart, tells us about the appeal of music festivals and their future in these unprecedented circumstances. There is nothing more quintessential than the humble British festival. Common experiences include: Getting tossed through a mosh pit of sticky arms with friends you’ve just made from the tent next door. Fumbling through your new fanny pack to check your phone is still there (and panic when it’s not). Not being able to find your tent, so you end up walking further than you did on DofE trying to find it. Ahhh, the bliss. Festivals have become increasingly popular throughout…
Label volunteer, Leah Langley, writes about the recent cancellation of Glastonbury Festival 2021, reminiscing some of the famous Glastonbury sets of the past. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Glastonbury 2021 was added to the list of events that are cancelled this year on January 21st. The festival’s 50th anniversary had already been cancelled in 2020 amid the COVID-19 crisis, and this year is no different with the crisis delaying it once more. A statement released on Twitter by founders Michael and Emily Eavis read: “With great regret, we must announce that this year’s Glastonbury Festival will not take place, and that this will…
Volunteer Writer, Olivia Tarr, discusses the importance of the Golden Globes recent nominations Despite feeling as though we are living in a parallel world when compared to this time last year, the Golden Globe nominations have given us a brief sense of normality and are as shocking and exciting as ever. After Natalie Portman’s call out speech against the lack of female director nominees in 2018, it is incredibly refreshing to see not just one but three, young women taking their place in the running’s for Best Director in this year’s Golden Globe awards. Three out of the five nominations…

Sports have always reflected society and this year is no different. We are living in the most unprecedented times in centuries and this year’s Premier League has been just as unpredictable. From the early title race between Aston Villa and Everton, to score lines that included Liverpool losing 7-2, Manchester City losing 5-2, Manchester United losing 6-1 and winning 9-0. By mid-February, the race for those Champions League are now finally starting to take…
