In an extraordinary game, the US Women’s ice hockey team pulled off an astonishing comeback to beat Canada 2-1 in overtime and clinch gold in Milan. Kristin O’Neill’s shot, early on in the second period, gave Canada a 1-0 lead. The USA were evidently rattled, having played 352 minutes this tournament without conceding. After a very tense match spanning 2 hours and 18 minutes, Elena Rybakina stunned Aryna Sabalenka to win her maiden Australian Open title (6-4, 4-6, 6-4). Beating the likes of Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula, Rybakina set up a blockbuster final against World No. 1 Sabalenka. Until recently, Elena Rybakina had been having quite a disappointing season, however on the 8th of November she dramatically beat World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka to claim victory at the WTA Finals in Riyadh. Despite winning the Strasbourg and Ningbo Open, Rybakina’s game had seen a decline this season with her facing early exits from all four grand slams. Her third-round Wimbledon defeat raised questions over how her off-court problems were affecting her game, with one notable issue being Stefano Vukov. BUCS Big Wednesday returns to Loughborough University for the second year in a row, as Loughborough seek to win the title for a 44th successive year. Sixth Time Lucky: England Beat South Africa to Win the Netball Nations Cup For the First Time.
On Sunday 9th February, the Vitality Roses secured a 61-55 win over South Africa to win the Netball Nations Cup in front of a sold-out Copper Box Arena in the capital. It was clear from the first game of the competition that Jenny Van Dyk’s side were motivated to win the trophy, as the opening game saw South Africa defeating Uganda 70-45.
