Gym Class Heroes were announced as the main headline act of the Freshers Ball 2011 on Thursday night live on LSUTV. The band, featuring lead singer Travie McCoy, will line up alongside Yasmin and DJ Fresh at the main event which will take place on Saturday October 8.
Gym Class Heroes had hits with ‘Cupid’s Chokehold’, ‘Clothes Off’ and ‘The Queen & I’ back in 2007 before lead singer Travie McCoy pursued his solo career with his hit single ‘Billionaire’ featuring Bruno Mars.
DJ Fresh is best known for his UK number one hit Louder, whereas Yasmin has had two top 40 hits with ‘On My Own’ and ‘Finish Line’ in 2011.
As well as the three live music acts, Magician Dynamo will also be performing on October 8. Dynamo, who is best known for his Sky One show, Magician Impossible where his illusions have included walking through glass and walking on the River Thames.
The Freshers Ball, which is often seen as the highlight of Freshers Week at Loughborough and last year included acts such as Eliza Doolittle and Professor Green, has four headline acts but plenty more acts have also been announced for events at the Students Union throughout the first two weeks of term.
A wide variety of musical acts have also been announced including American rock band Wheatus, most famous for their hit ‘Teenage Dirtbag’, and English duo band Nero who have recently had singles such as ‘Guilt’ and ‘Promises’ make the UK top 40 both making their Loughborough debuts on October 3 and 16 respectively.
Other musical attractions include Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills at the Returners FND, Loick Essien on October 15, Modestep with support from Millions Like Us for Freshers FND as well as DJ Gramophone and Radio 1xtra’s Nick Bright both at the Welcome Party on September 29.
Away from music, Britain’s Got Talent finalist Steven Hall will be bringing his comic dancing to Hey Ewe, Loughborough’s Athletic Union night, on September 28. And X-rated hypnotist Tony Lee makes a return to Loughborough after his very popular performance last year. Finally, there will be live comedy on October 9 with performers yet to be confirmed.
Other dates for your diary for Freshers 2011 include The Sing Off (Oct 2), Hey Ewe Paint Party (Oct 5) and Hey Ewe Foam Party (Oct 12). Clearly there will be lots on offer at Loughborough Students Union during the first few weeks to kick of the 2011/12 academic year.
