Our Head of Social Media, Lou Goswell has put together a list of her fave Christmas movies. Don’t say we never do anything for you!
It’s getting a bit chilly, and with the festive season upon us, all you want to do is sit cuddled up in blankets, hot chocolate with marshmallows in hand, watching the best of Christmas, am I right? Well, nothing says Christmas better than the classics. Here is a list of the old and new that will help get you in that Christmassy spirit.
A Christmas Carol: I particularly love the animated version starring Jim Carey, but any version will work wonderfully with the Christmas celebrations. The selfish Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by three ghosts of the past, present and future. Will he ever change? This festive number is adapted from Charles Dickins’ classic and will certainly leave you feeling all the more Christmassy!
Miracle on 34th Street: Again, another classic. This sweet festive favourite is about a Santa in a New York department store. He is the embodiment of Christmas, leading little Susan (a non-believer) to wonder whether Santa really does exist. There are two versions of this film and both are thoroughly recommendable.
Home Alone: If you haven’t seen this already – you must! Kevin must face the pressures of adulthood after his parents accidentally leave him at home for the Christmas vacation. Whilst the film may have you wanting to ring social services ASAP, it will also feel extremely relatable. Never has the pressures of adulthood freshers experience been represented, until Home Alone. Whilst our halls aren’t being robbed by evil perpetrators, we do have to protect our milk and bread. A must watch.
Love Actually: You’ll feel it in your fingers, you’ll feel it in your toes. If you love a rom-com and you love Christmas, then this is your film. Extremely English, extremely sarcastic and extremely awkward. With the crossing paths of our favourite celebrities, what’s not to love? If you’re not a fan of rom-coms, give it a go anyway! It might surprise you.
Die Hard: Christmas is all about cheese, make a film as corny as possible and you’ll get a Christmas film! But if you need a break, Die Hard is the way to go. Bruce Willis runs around without shoes in the name of saving Christmas and saving lives. Whilst the internet has blown up, dividing the world into those who believe it’s a Christmas movie, and the nonbelievers, you can’t deny that there are Christmas decorations in the film. Regardless of your position, it’s a feelgood film that will leave you feeling blessed that you’re not stuck in a shopping mall on Christmas Eve.
The Polar Express: Tom Hanks. Convinced?
How The Grinch Stole Christmas: The magical land of Dr Seuss’ mind is brought to you through Jim Carey’s fabulously horrific and terrifyingly brilliant portrayal of The Grinch. Cindy Lou reminds us of the true meaning of Christmas. But can she get the cold old Grinch’s heart beating again?
Trading Places: This comedic masterpiece is worth mentioning, and often goes forgotten when it comes to Christmas movies. Dan Aykroyd, an arrogant investor, and Eddie Murphy, a poor street beggar, find their lives are swapped – a result of a bet made between two millionaire brothers, Randolph and Mortimer Duke. This will have you cringing and laughing all at once!
The Snowman: Whilst not strictly a movie, and instead a TV special, the beautiful musical arrangement of this will surely make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. I cannot watch this film without feeling heartbroken, but nothing says Christmas better. The beautiful story of an adventure of a young boy and his snowman. A great watch for the sleepy Boxing-day afternoon. It’s not Christmas without The Snowman.
