Summer doesnât have to mean blowing your entire maintenance loan in one week. For those with a taste for culture, Budapest offers the perfect mix of history and hotspots. With affordable hostels and reasonably priced food, itâs ideal for a long weekend away, or a mid-week escape. Itâs both convivial and culturedâ what more do you need for a trip with uni friends?
If youâre looking for a destination not everyone in your seminar will be posting from, consider one of the 9 islands of the Azores, the âHawaii of Europeâ. Pico Island in Spring can offer you sights of over 20 species of whales and dolphins, ranging from Blue Whales to Bottlenose Dolphins. Itâs the kind of experience that feels once-in-a-lifetime but can be significantly cheaper compared to most commercial wildlife tours. Whilst perhaps a little more expensive than other student scenes, the slower pace of these beautiful Portuguese islands can transport you to a world beyond lectures and laundry.
Stay-cations are becoming more and more popular as prices rise globally. For a more relaxed touch, a spa day at Centre Parcs can cost as little as ÂŁ55â the perfect treat after two hours of research methods. An Air BnB in the Lake District comes with lake views, wildlife swimming spots and highland cows. Avoid the more touristic locations like Windermere or Ambleside, and focus on smaller, less popular villages such as Kendal or Penrith.
If budget is an important factor in your 2026 summer plans, start planning early. Set up flight alerts, check local airports and consider mid-week travel to avoid elevated prices. Late May and early September can offer the best student-friendly prices, whilst still providing those beaming rays of sunshine we miss out on in dreary England. Planning now doesnât just save you money, it gives you something to look forward to. And letâs be honest, getting through exam season becomes much easier if you know thereâs a boarding pass waiting for you on the other side.
