With the charts now firmly set on a Friday release, we thought rather than run down the top 40, we’d take a look back at some of the best number ones since music began (well, charts began). Bringing you everything from eighties classics to noughties bangers, make sure to be here, every Friday, for a flashback of some of the biggest chart hits.
Up this week: Blondie – ‘Heart of Glass’
Reaching the top spot on the 3rd February 1979, Blondie’s ‘Heart of Glass’ managed an impressive 4 weeks at number one before being knocked off by the Bee Gees a month later. Bringing a fusion of disco pop to proceedings, ‘Heart of Glass’, taken from the New Yorkers killer album Parallel Lines, was quite rightly, one of the bands best tracks, and one of the finest number ones to grace the UK chart.
Originally penned as a slowed down reggae infused ballad, the injection of a disco beat, akin to the likes of Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder, saw the track bleed new life. Regularly selected as one of the best songs of the 70s, and indeed all time, this Flashback Friday is all about Harry and co. To Blondie, we salute.
