November 11th, 2012 saw the eighteenth MTV Europe Music Awards, held in Frankfurt, Germany. When nominations were announced on the September 17th, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift led the categories with eight, and five nominations respectively.
Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift enjoyed successful nights, both scooping up multiple awards. Bieber found success in Best Male, Best Pop, Best World Stage Performance and Biggest Fans. While Swift won Best Look, Best Live Act and Best Female.
Everyone’s favourite tune of the last year Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen won Best Song, and Best Video went to PSY’s Gangnam Style. Jepsen also won Best Push Act. After an immensely successful couple of years, One Direction added to their achievements by winning Best New Act.
Coldplay, Green Day, Muse and The Killers missed out on Best Rock to American rock band Linkin Park, while Lana Del Ray triumphed in Best Alternative, David Guetta in Best Electronic and Nicki Minaj in Best Hip Hop.
Best Worldwide Act went to Han Geng, a Chinese Mandopop singer and actor. And finally, the prestigious Global Icon award was deservedly awarded to the late Whitney Houston.
