The third ‘Big Match’ saw Loughborough Netball 2’s take on fierce rivals Cambridge producing an exciting game which saw end to end action, with Loughborough subsequently winning 40-26.

The fixture got off to a slow start with both teams taking their time to settle into the game. Once settled, Loughborough got in to their stride putting together decent passes which consequently allowed Roye at goal shoot to put away some good goals, much to the delight of the crowd.

In addition, the defensive partnership of Natalie Ekweogwu and Abi Tudor made some great interceptions. Cambridge put up a good fight, which was reflected in the score at the end of the first quarter, 8-8.

The second quarter started in very much the same way as the first, with uncharacteristic mistakes from both sides. Loughborough made some changes in the break with Halliwell replacing Hancock at goal attack.

With Tudor working hard at goal keep, Cambridge found it difficult at times to get the ball in to the shooting circle, to which Loughborough replied with goals.

The centre court players worked incredibly hard to ensure Loughborough continuously turned over the ball, providing the shooting partnership ample of opportunities. The girls finished the second quarter 20-13 in Loughborough’s favour.

Despite being seven goals behind, Cambridge came out fighting, however with Mulderiig making great use of the space and feeding the ball in to the circle well. Cambridge struggled to find the net first time at each shot and Loughborough began to pull away and with some great turnovers the third quarter ended 31-21.

The team made some tactical changes for the fourth and final quarter. With a lack of movement by the Cambridge shooters, Loughborough defence found it easy to make several crucial interceptions. Turning Cambridge’s lost possession in to Loughborough goals, the home team continued at the same pace they’d executed throughout the entire game.

And with Cambridge looking tired and making many mistakes, Loughborough were able to make full use of this opportunity in giving the crowd a taste of what is to come for the rest of the season.

Although not an easy game, Loughborough were definitely the deserved winners on the night with a final score of 40-26.
