Jack ‘Tintin’ Heskett has told Label that his budget is “out the window” after just five days of campaigning to become Loughborough’s first VP Welfare and Diversity.
The current Welfare Development Officer (DO) explained to Label the huge differences he is facing compared to last year, “Yeah obviously last year I wasn’t contested so I didn’t really feel the pressure to spend money. This time around I’ve spent a lot more than I anticipated; the budget is out the window. I easily spent double what I spent last year already.”
Despite Ali Cole, VP Democracy and Communications candidate, announced his support of sweets at the Candidates Quiz on Thursday, Heskett would disagree;
“The current amount of sweets I have left which is probably a tenth of what I had to start off with. I don’t know how I’m going to get through the rest of campaigning with just that. It looks like I’m going to have to buy some more or get a little bit creative.”
VP Welfare and Diversity, the position that Heskett is running for, is designed to help people with financial struggles among many other things, an irony not lost on ‘Tintin’, “Welfare is about financial issues as well, i’m not the most well off person and it’s definitely a struggle.”
Despite the troubles he is now facing, Heskett is remaining positive;
“It shows I really want this job but at the same time I’m running the risk it’s going to cost me a lot of money in the long run. I was aware of it [the cost], I did it anyway. I think because of experiencing it last year, i knew how much everyone was spending.”
With no spending limit on the elections this year, Label asked the Welfare DO whether he believes the high costs of running the elections has put people off?
“I know it has.”
