Oktobersesh, one of the two main night-time activities planned for Freshers 2020, has been cancelled as a halls-only event and changed to an all-University event by LSU. The event was originally held as a ‘welcome event’ for the Freshers and would have been covered by Freshers’ Hall Subs, but is now a ticketed event, meaning that Freshers will now have to individually buy tickets at £5 per head, like the rest of the student population. New Course Representatives and School Presidents will now be appointed rather than elected, in a bid from LSU to remove “barriers to participation” for students. In an exclusive interview with Education Executive Officer Ana-Maria Bilciu, she highlighted that there was an “urgent need to reshape” the roles, with low voting numbers and the election process itself putting off “a lot of students who would make fantastic Reps”. Coronavirus cases have increased once again in Loughborough, with at least 36 more individuals testing positive in Loughborough, up from 21 the week before, an increase of 71%. 36 positive cases were confirmed last week across Loughborough, of which 6 were located in the Loughborough University area which covers campus accommodation, William Morris Hall and the Old Ashby Road area. A major increase has been seen in Shelthorpe, which has reported 12 cases in the last week, prompting Charnwood Council to open a walk-in testing site in the town from Friday. The Government have today launched the NHS Test & Trace app to the general public. The app has been in development for months and was at the centre of a number of high profile disagreements between the UK Government and tech firms Apple & Google. The Government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) in their latest meeting has encouraged Ministers to prevent students from returning home after the term ends at Christmas. SAGE warn of ‘larger outbreaks’ when students return from university at the end of the academic term. Experts are concerned that students will spread COVID-19 back to their local communities when they return home for the Christmas break and urged ministers to develop policies to mitigate the risks posed. The University released a statement last night detailing the guidelines and precautions which will be taken in the new academic year, following the new Government outlines for the coronavirus pandemic. On Tuesday, the government formally announced that from Thursday, pubs, bars and restaurants will now have a curfew of 10pm and will be restricted to table service only. Charnwood Borough Council (the local council for the Loughborough area) have today published a statement relating to the return of students to Loughborough next week. The local council has been preparing for “months” to make the return of students to Loughborough “safe and Covid-secure”.
