Often the simplest decisions surprise you in difficulty. As a fresher, I notice myself wasting far too much time wondering what to do in those precious unscheduled moments.

This article aims to guide readers towards a simpler way to spend your precious free time. This feels like a huge responsibility for me to be taking on. But if you have the same tastes as me, I assure you you’ll love every moment.

An Album for Breakfast: Let Go – Avril Lavigne

I’m a self-proclaimed music enthusiast. My catholic and eclectic tastes have recently developed massively, and although not everyone appreciates everything I listen to, I’m believe in simply picking a combination of what I enjoy and what those around me enjoy too.

I’ve been fond of Let Go’s ability to take me on nostalgic and creative journeys through the iconic 2000s lens, on every listen. However, my strongest recommendation is to find music that’s nostalgic to you, maybe an album or old playlist, put it on, and get the boost you needed all along.

A Show for Lunch: Would I Lie to You?

Okay, everyone’s into different things, so I didn’t pick my favourite fictional show. This panel-show has that power to make you laugh louder than you thought you could. If you’re grinning in the middle of tomorrow’s lecture, it’s because Bob Mortimer’s nonsensical (but somehow true) tales just popped their way back into your head.

As for lunch, many may be content with a mid-day snack and won’t worry about ‘meals’ until later. Me? I need good lunches for good afternoons. Whichever sandwiches tickle your fancy, just this once, treat yourself to some of that ‘nice bread’. When you have to slice it yourself, crust smelling better than your kitchen after cleaning day – that nice bread.

A Film for Dinner: Guardians of the Galaxy

It felt impossible to not mention Star Wars. But sci-fi tends to split rooms. So does Marvel, but Guardians of the Galaxy becomes more of a crowd pleaser the more nostalgic it gets. There are many great films out there, and I’d certainly recommend opening your eye to genres or time-periods that you haven’t explored much (shouting out 2000s rom-coms), but, more importantly, find the right people to watch with. It may well change your experience of films.

(Honorary mentions – When Harry Met Sally…, Jerry Maguire)

Bonus activity: LEGO

Not many will have brought LEGO to uni, but here’s to those who did! Those who didn’t, up your game. It’s not childish anymore, if it ever was, and some of the best days involve hours losing your mind to a LEGO project. Whether you’re brave and resourceful enough to make your own creations, or rich and excited enough to buy and build a set, LEGO can bring you a lot of joy.

(Honorary mentions – one-colour colouring, or a game of pool in the best common room)

So there, a ‘perfect’ day. It may be that my combined suggestions would put you off ‘free-time’ for three years, but remember the essence of this article: try to combine new experiences with old favourites. Have a great one!
