Humble, Charitable, Sex Symbol; is this a new Justin Bieber?
With the drop of Justin Bieber’s new album, Purpose, everywhere and everyone on campus is either playing one of his new hit singles or at least talking about them. Bieber isn’t normally my go to artist when I walk around the bubble with my earphones in, but his new album is definitely changing my opinion. I wouldn’t call myself a Belieber but singles such as Sorry, What do you mean and Love Yourself are of a different genre and style to Bieber’s other and previous music, they have me questioning if I’m turning into one!
The first taste of new Bieber music was introduced to us in his collaboration with Jack Ü, the DJ duo of Diplo and Skrillex and their track Where Are Ü Now, which was Bieber’s first Top 40 hit since 2013. Since then, Justin has stayed very vague on details about his newest album but gave a few hints in an interview at 2015 Wango Tango.
“Overall, I’m just happy with the place I’m at creatively. I feel like this is probably the best I’ve been. There’s not really a direction. It’s like, uplifting music that people can dance to…it’s a little different, it’s really uplifting and people are going to smile when they listen to it”
The genre of Bieber’s fourth studio album contains a lot of variety with elements of pop, electronic dance and dancehall. Justin wrote Love Yourself with Ed Sheeran and Benjamin Levin (Benny Blanco) and Sheeran has influenced Bieber’s style of his new album.
His new uptempo music is fun, catchy and easy to sing along too and that’s why his songs have been the most played on my phone, in my house, at the gym, at pre drinks, at the union, well, pretty much everywhere!
Purpose is definitely a new style of music for me. And whatever category that may fall into: pop, electronic dance, dancehall then it’s all my new ‘genre of the week’. What’s yours?
