Work has now officially began on the new STEMLab building on campus today. This £17 million development will enable the University to add to its teaching and learning facilities for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (known as STEM subjects) as well as becoming a focal point for engaging with school-age students in science and engineering.
The first turf as turned by Professor Rachel Thomson who was joined by staff and students to celebrate the launching of the project. There were also representatives present from the construction company Henry Brothers as well as Vice Chancellor Professor Bob Allison and Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Chris Linton.
In terms of funding, Loughborough has been awarded £5 million from the Higher Education Funding Council for England and an additional £250,000 from the Garfield Western Foundation. This will provide a suite of learning facilities for bio-science and bio-engineering, both fast growing fields that will one day help address major societal changes.
The STEMLab will be the cornerstone of a £25 million development of a ‘student learning zone’ and is expected to open in 2017 at the west end of Loughborough campus.
