An email titled "Important information for students and staff" has been distributed to all students and staff of the university with health advice following information from the Health Protection Agency.
The Agency has informed the university that "someone closely associated with the university has been diagnosed with meningococcal disease and has been admitted to hospital."
The email continued to explain that there was no need for campus-wide action from students or staff but provides further information for students on meningitis and septicaemia.
A list of symptoms for both illnesses is below and further medical information is available on any of the following websites: Menigitis Research Foundation, The National Mengitis Trust and NHS Direct.
If a person does become ill with the symptoms (below), the university's advice is to contact a doctor urgently and ask for advice.
Symptoms (Not all these signs may show at once):
Mengitisis: fever, vomiting, severe headache, stiff neck, dislike of bright light.
Septicaemia: fever, vomiting, bruising rash, rapid breathing, cold hands and feet, joint/muscle pains.
