When I began writing for Label, I never, in my worst nightmares, imagined that I would come to write about the death of good friend and fellow Loughborough student.
Sadly, this all changed on the evening of Saturday April 7. I received a phone call from a friend with the most awful news that Thomas Healy had passed away in a tragic accident.
This was such shocking news that knew would affect so many people, whose lives Tom had touched, with his beaming smile, outrageous dance moves and incredible sense of humor.
Tom, whose home is in the Kingstanding area of Birmingham, was in his second year at Loughborough studying for a degree in Geography. He was a popular, much loved and well respected member of David Collett Hall.
Hundreds of touching tributes have been left on Tom’s Facebook page by his friends and family showing how much of a popular and well loved individual he was. It has taken a long time for it to sink in, that such an amazing young man with such high prospects could be taken from us so prematurely.
Although everybody who had the pleasure of meeting Tom will know that Loughborough won’t quite be the same from now on.
On the night of Friday April 6, Tom was travelling along the M6 in Birmingham on his way to a night out with his friends. At around 11.45pm Tom left the minibus that they were travelling in between junctions 5 and 6, and was last seen walking along the hard shoulder just before midnight.
When Tom failed to get in contact with his friends or parents that night or the next morning, his parents reported him missing to the police. His dad then went out to look around the area where Tom was last seen, in the hope of finding him safe and well.
However, on the afternoon of the April 7, any parent’s worst nightmare came true for Tom’s dad when he found his son lying under a motorway bridge near an industrial estate. West Midlands Police reported that post-mortem tests revealed injuries consistent with a fall.
Tom will always have a place in our hearts and I know that he would want us all to carry on loving life in his memory.
