Marc Jacobs, one of the world's most talked about designers, was truly in the spotlight as he unveiled his new collection for Louis Vuitton in the courtyard of the Louvre Museum in the heart of Paris.
The fairground-themed show, complete with an old-fashioned moving carousel, featured flirty shapes, pastel colours and feminine detailing. White monogrammed umbrellas, Alice bands and tiaras made for an ultra lady-like, 60's-inspired collection.
Broderie anglaise, a type of embroidery with eyelets edged in buttonhole stitches is the keystone of the look, alongside laser cut, over sized flowers adorning buttoned up collars, blouses, skirts and dresses – although the collection is predominantly all in innocent white and pretty pastel colours, a small handful of greys, blacks and navies peep through underneath flower shaped holes.
Pretty, gentle-cut skirts, overlaid with a tone-on-tone sheer veil, fall on the right side of prim, skimming the curve of the hip and stopping at the knee or just below. Dresses are cut in a demure empire line with short silk sleeves, while a final series in sequined ivory broderie anglaise and ostrich feathers fluttering in stunning blues, pinks and yellows, gave a subtle clash in textures – another trend that is big this season.
Matched with button-front white blouses or short jackets nipped in at the waist, overly pointed heels in black or white, the look was innocently feminine, with hair pulled back into chignons under thin tiaras.
For the fairytale finale of the show, in a creamy ivory bubble dress cut high on the thigh, Kate Moss shined in a shimmer of fluffy white feathers, as the icing on Vuitton's cake.
The New York designer said he went for a look that was "soft, soothing, gentle, light, tender, feminine, airy, loving. A frosted sugary, sponge sugar type of feeling, like wrappers on a candy," he summed up.
The collection is already popular with celebrities. Actresses Sarah Jessica Parker, Cate Blanchett, Olivia Wilde and Elle Fanning have already been seen in the laser-cut dresses from this Spring/Summer collection, proving that the look is going to be big.
