Label’s own Music Editor, Henna Amin, sits down with up-and-coming singer Cat Burns after her performances on the Coffee House Sessions Tour.
Hi Cat, thanks for chatting with Label today! Why don’t we start with you telling us a little bit about yourself? Where are you from and how did you get into music?
I’m from Streatham in South London, and I’ve always had a love for music but only wanted to pursue it properly after a school talent show in Year 6 when I realised this was my dream.
Year 6, those were the days. How would you describe your style of music?
I would say Meaningful Pop with an edge to it.
I like it. So, you’ve been touring over the last few months on the Coffee House Sessions Tour, what has it been like to travel around the country and perform like this?
I’ve grown a lot of confidence with performing since doing the tour. Travelling around the country was really good fun. I got to go to places I had never been to before and meet new people whilst performing.
And your latest single “Just Us”, what was your inspiration behind it?
I really wanted to create a gender flipped version of a song concept we hear so frequently with guys. The girl is always chasing the guy and wanting him, when really it happens a lot the other way round, so I wanted to write a song about that for all the girls.
What’s it been like to put yourself out there and see such a positive response to your work as an artist? You were even shouted out by Jamz Supernova on BBC 1Xtra – that must have been mad.
It’s been exciting, especially to see how people react to my music. It’s a great way to gather whether the song is actually good or not and can be understood by an audience. The support from Jamz on BBC 1Xtra was amazing and a really great start to my career for me!
Which artist would you say has been the greatest influence on your career?
I wouldn’t say there’s been one particular artist that’s influenced me, but in terms of inspiration I’ve always loved Tori Kelly and her relatable lyrics. I’d also say Lily Allen too.
It’s obviously been a big year for you and your music, what do you have in store for 2019?
Definitely some new music in 2019, and hopefully a tour slot!
Sounds good. Thanks so much for stopping by to speak with us!
