Loughborough Golf enjoys another successful week, winning three from three!
The 1’s were away for their second game of the season to UCLAN at Lytham Green drive. Captain Matthew Goodley sailed through his match with an unprecedented -5 round of golf including 6 birdies and a single bogey. He ended his game in style with a birdie 2. Unfortunately Nathan Brown saw a spell of bad luck, chipping in for birdie at dormie 3 down only to have his opponent holeout on top of him. Clutch wins in tight games from Luke & Lucas, Lucas nearly broke the air with a Seve-esque fist pump for his chip-in on 13. Nerves were calmed and as Luke’s opponent piped it OB on the last making things much less stressful for all involved. Things were quickly resolved with another steady showing from Finn Begley. 4-2 win; Roll on Birmingham 1s next Wednesday!
The 2’s were away to Warwick 1’s at the excellently kept Warwickshire GC. Following the exciting finish from last week to Leicester, the team were in high spirits. Captain Andy Hooper carried the team out strong with a 6&4 win including 2 great birdies on 600+ yard par 5’s. Matthew McCleary fell to a steady Warwick opponent 6&4. The second group saw Alex Harrison extend his unbeaten run with a solid effort winning 5&4. Matthew Nagle unfortunately lost down the last hole bringing the score back to 2-2. Alex Marks won his first game for Loughborough 2’s 4&2 leaving all eyes on Ben Townsend, Dormie 1 down on the last. Ben’s drive piled what proved to be too much pressure on his opponent as he drove his ball out of bounds leaving an easy par for Ben to seal the win 3.5-2.5.
The 3’s were looking to bounce off last week’s disappointing draw to East Anglia. A home tie to undefeated Nottingham Trent set tensions high. Leading the pack, Luke Williams and Will Thompson set high moods as they sailed to their wins 7&6,7&5 respectively. Simon Aiken struggled to recover from the first 3 holes and remained behind, losing 4&2. Aneesh won 13,14 and 15 to win his match 4&3 leaving the score tied 3-2. Will Worboys struggled to win his final hole to square his match as his opponent stuck it to 2 feet on the last for a birdie. All pressure lied with Bella Angel in her first game for Loughborough. Finishing birdie-par-par-birdie, which included canning a 35-footer on the last hole won Loughborough the match 4-2.
Performance of the week has to go to Captain Matthew Goodley, for his 5-under round at Lytham Green Drive. His performance involved some excellent putts and iron play to deliver for the 1’s.
