It’s that time of the year again. No, unfortunately not Christmas. HUSTINGS! Also known as a week of crazy campaigning by some very zealous and extremely excitable individuals who are adamant to get onto Hall Committee.
**Warning: eyebrows might be lost over the course of this period**
The Hall Committee swap over is bound to cause more of a stir than the parliamentary cabinet reshuffle. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, then shame on you.
Now we all know those people who made Freshers the best seventeen days of most of our lives to date, well at least mine did. The much loved hall committee, they made your parents feel assured about leaving you in the big wide world of Loughborough and showed us all how to have a good time Lufbra style. Matter of fact remains that Hall Committee play an important role in the life of every student who has ever lived in halls.
But the question is why do they do what they do? Why do they make posters of themselves they hope future employers never see? Why do they paint themselves blue on a rainy day and end up looking like a streaky mess? What exactly do they get out of helping you?
Perk #1: You actually get to make a difference … if you want to.
Being on Hall Committee isn’t like being on the school council, you actually get things done; you have all the power be it Action, Rag, Sport, Media, Social, Stash -you make things happen.
Perk #2: It’s a great laugh!
Sure there is responsibility involved but it’s also an absolutely amazing time full of “lols”, especially putting new potential candidates through their paces during Hustings.
Perk #3: That prestige feeling
As you walk around with your name and title emblazoned on your hall stash, people will just assume you are important. Who doesn’t want to be on the A team? #committeeswag
Perk #4 Life’s a party!
Of course you get to reap the fruits of your labour by doing Freshers/Refreshers and pretty much all of the festivities for the year that you helped organise. You’re pretty much in control of punch for the next party, be that a blessing or a curse.
Perk #5:It looks great on your CV
The reason why most of us do things – despite how much work or effort you actually put in, being on a committee at university looks pretty dapper to potential employers… Just so long as you don’t mention what you had to do to get onto committee!
