On Thursday 21st November at 4:30pm members of Loughborough Students’ ‘Time For Change’ have organised a candlelight vigil to those hit by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. It will take place at Rutland fountain (by the union) and there will be a few speakers and a few minutes silence. They would like as many people as possible to come along and show their support.
They are supporting ‘People and Planet’ and 350.org with others around the world who are also organising candlelight vigils to show their solidarity with everyone struggling through the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan.
Our friends in the Philippines have asked for people to light a candle for these three reasons:
– Climate Justice for the victims and survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines
– To make sure funds received from foreign aid go to immediate relief and rehabilitation.
– Meaningful outcomes in UN climate talks moving the world towards emission reductions and support for climate adaptation in vulnerable countries.
Typhoon Haiyan was unprecedented — the strongest storm at landfall ever recorded. It’s some of the most vivid evidence of climate change to date, and a harrowing reminder of what the future may look like for the world.
This event is also tied into Loughborough Students’ ‘Time For Change’ ultimate goal with ‘People and Planet’ to slow down Climate Change by getting Loughborough University to phase out support for the fossil fuel industry in research, partnerships and investments.
