During the newly introduced Media Week to the Executive Elections schedule, Label interviewed former Elvyn Richards Social Sec, Isobel Ford, about her upcoming campaign for the hotly contested VP: Welfare and Diversity position, running against Maz Haider and Dave Tingle.
Isobel showed that great things come in small packages, as her bubbly and confident personality was on show, and was well dressed for the occasion. These were her answers to Label's big five questions:
1. What are the main reasons behind you running for VP Welfare and Diversity?
“Well I currently sit on Georgie’s [Court] Welfare and Diversity committee, and it has developed my interest in the position since I applied last year. More than anything, I would like to develop the changes that Georgie has made, increase awareness of Loughborough Welfare and Diversity, and to ensure that Loughborough is having the best student experience possible.”
2. What do you think of the current VP Welfare and Diversity and is there anything you would plan to do differently if you were in that position next year?
“I think Georgie has done a wonderful job this year, which is why developing her strides forward is a key part of my manifesto. Being on her committee has been a great experience, and now I have seen when and where things could potentially go wrong, I believe I have the experience required to carry over in this position.
If I were to do anything differently, I suppose I would focus more on support groups for underrepresented minorities and for specific issues such as self-harm and bereavement, for example.”
3. What is your one main manifesto point?
“I actually have quite a long manifesto of six points, but I would say my main point would be to further develop Welfare and Diversity events and make them well-renown at Loughborough; much like those of Rag and Action. Perhaps this comes down to awareness, which is also covered in one of my following points involving a more centralised use of potential spaces for Welfare and Diversity events. For example, I didn’t know it was possible to do a full sexual health screening on campus, but having the information would then aid a group wanting to set one up next year.”
4. Why should students vote for you to be the next VP Welfare and Diversity over anyone else in Loughborough?
“Well I have a huge passion for the promotion of student welfare on campus, and for increasing the diversity of Loughborough University. I have a wealth of experience, on hall and social committees as well as Welfare and Diversity, so I bring a wide-experience base to the table.”
5. In one sentence, can you sum up what you think the role of VP Welfare and Diversity involves?
“In broad terms, to promote the idea of student welfare to the entire University and create a more diverse Loughborough. And also to ensure that nobody feels misrepresented and has a say in how the Students Union is run.”
