David Haines told LCR that “Welfare is something Loughborough has lagged behind in a lot of ways for a number of years” after the Candidates Quiz on Thursday night.
Haines, who used silence as part of his two minute speech at the quiz, to emphasise how there’s a need to address isolation and how vitally important talking can be.
When asked about the state of Loughborough’s welfare, Haines said;
“Compared to their [Loughborough’s] international record it’s very poor […] having gone and spoken to so many people and stuff there’s so many things that we really do ignore as a university and need to really reconsider how we got about things.”
Haines anticipates dealing with a broad range of issues from financial, due to the increased fees, to mental health which also “needs more attention. And it’s good to hear that Loughborough’s finally taking notice.”
The ex-Holt Hall Chair also noted how the Executive Elections differed from running for hall committees;
“Having been on hall committees before, it’s a very different experience, for that people are expected to do this, that and the other. Here, it’s nice that people show initiative.”
David ‘Pokemon’ Haines is running against Georgie ‘Colourful’ Court and Jack ‘Tintin’ Heskett for the position of VP Welfare and Diversity.
