Last week, Label interviewed Becky Lauder-Fletcher, a postgraduate student running uncontested for VP Education. Becky was chatty and enthusiastic, yet serious about her manifesto points, and what she hopes to achieve if elected. We asked Becky The Big Five Questions, and these were her responses:

  1. What are the main reasons behind you running for VP Education?

"I’ve been involved with different voluntary positions to do with Education, and this is my fourth year, as I’m now a postgraduate student doing a Masters. I’ve seen a lot improve in Education, specifically in this position, during my time here. I think that the ideas I’ve got are building upon things that have been improved, and they can work. I want to see it improved even more for an even better student experience."

  1. What do you think of the current VP Education and is there anything you would plan to do differently if you were in that position next year?

"I think Laz has done a really good job this year; I’ve really seen movement in the area. For example, improving module feedback, and I know he’s currently working on improving contact time. After speaking to Laz, I really think emphasising things on Department Committees, and getting students involved in their Departments more is something that definitely needs to be improved. That’s what I really want to focus on – getting students more involved in their Departments."

  1. What is your one main manifesto point?

"My main point is the modernisation of the Department Committee system. This is something I have been involved in since my first year, so I really want to see it stepped up and improved. I want to really combine HSF with Department Committees. I want to really push getting involved with your Committee through Halls; most students enter halls, and this could therefore be put upon them straight away. I am thinking about adjusting the dates of Department Elections; by having them later on, in May, more people in the Department are settled and more likely to run. This will lead to more people taking part, and hopefully more people voting."

  1. Why should students vote for you to be the next VP Education over anyone else in Loughborough?

"I really think that I understand the Loughborough Experience. I think I am a good example when I say that; I am here in my fourth year, and I chose to stay on because I enjoyed it so much. I’ve been involved in Halls, Departments, Societies. I’ve been a Union Councillor. I’ve got involved in everything, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed myself. I think that I am a very approachable person, and I can talk to anyone about anything. I think that’s what it’s about. I’ve also stepped into the Loughborough Experience, and I think that’s what you need to do – to interact with other students."

  1. In one sentence, can you sum up what you think the role of VP Education involves?

"I think it’s about communicating directly to the student body and representing them as an educational link between University and Union life."
