The world can seem like a scary place at the best of times, but what one thing would you change if you have the power? Volunteer writer, Ana-Maria Bilciu, shares her thoughts on how kindness could truly change our world.
If I could change one thing about the world, I would simply make people the tiniest bit kinder. I believe many issues that our society is facing right now could easily be resolved, or at least mended, if human beings showed empathy above anything else.
I like to think there is good in every single one of us – whilst it is relatively easy to spot it in certain individuals, it may take longer to see it in others. But then again, good things come to those who wait, so it’s crucial we show love, support and understanding to those that are perhaps not ready to open up just yet.
Ever since I was little, I was always told that kindness is a very special trait to possess, yet a very challenging one to express. I never made much of that as a child; not even as a teenager, really. After many experiences, however, with emphasis on those that were difficult to overcome, all pieces fit together – it can seem very hard to be kind when it is so much easier to lash out and channel your hurt or anger in a negative manner.
If there is one thing I have learnt that will always stay with me, it is that every single word or action has consequences, especially in tense situations – we do not decide if we hurt someone, which is truly undeniable. That is why I believe kindness is quintessential; if you can be patient and understanding to the point in which you channel your energy to overcome an incredibly difficult situation, you have won in my books.
We all have our own stories, and often struggle with our own problems, which in terms means that we may not be able to give our very best in every single circumstance – this is why it is so very important we continuously show empathy to those around us; we sometimes forget how far kind words can get us, and what a powerful impact they can have on someone else.
So, here it is – if I could change one thing about the world to make it better, I would always choose spreading kindness; I hope you would, too. Always remember that being kind does not mean you have to be content all the time; it means that even during difficult moments, you need not to forget how important it is you think of those around you, and how much you could change their lives for the better if you show empathy.
Even the toughest of situations can be turned around if you never cease to be kind and loving.
