Last week saw the performance of Jim Cartwright’s Two directed by James Bentley and Samantha Galbraith. Culture’s Adam Thompson sat down with James Bentley to ask him a few questions about the production.
Hi James, just want to ask you a few questions about your play Can you tell me a bit about the play?
Certainly! Two is a play that explores different types of relationships that exist within a pub, both among the patrons and between the landlord and landlady themselves in an often comedic and light-hearted way, but can sometimes be quite thoughtful and heart-rending.
Is this your first time directing? And how did you find it- was it what you thought it would be?
Yeah, it’s my first time directing, but I’m not directing alone. I’m also directing with Samantha Galbraith. My first thoughts about directing was that I wanted to make sure that Sam and I had as much organised before we auditioned as possible, but quite a lot of different things meant we had to find work-arounds and adapt, but thanks to our amazing cast, it hasn’t been altogether too hard.
Who in the show is most like their character?
I’d say the person who is most like their character in the play would be Eleanor Cambridge, who plays the part of Alice, a girl who is kept grounded by her still slightly spacey partner, Fred, played by Bradley Thompson.
What sort of person is going to love this show?
We believe that you’ll love the show if you enjoy people-watching and going to the pub .
What do you hope the audience will be feeling on their way home from watching Two?
I hope that when the audience leave they’ll be feeling bittersweet but happy.
