If you’re looking for a new TV show that represents a variety of culture, sexuality, and personalities then our Netflix pick of the week ‘Sense8’ is the perfect show to binge-watch when you have a night to yourself, or even a show to watch with friends.
This Netflix Original, brought to you by J. Michael Straczynski and sisters Lilly and Lana Wachowski, who also brought us The Matrix trilogy, focuses on eight troubled strangers who are living in destinations such as England, Korea, India and Germany. The story commences after they all become witness to the horrific death of what they think to be a random woman. From the first 10 minutes of the opening episode, it’s apparent that these characters have a powerful bond that nobody has ever seen before.
After a lot of searching, the characters come to the haunting realisation that they’re mentally connected and have ‘powers’ – and there’s no way this connection is about to disappear anytime soon. The relationships that develop between the so called ‘sensates’ are both platonic and romantic, and you have yourself rooting for couples that as a viewer you would never have put together. Originality and legitimacy in terms of cast, location and cinematography are critical to Straczynski’s and the Wachowski’s work on this show. The actors and actresses in the show are originally from the countries their characters are from, with the episodes themselves being shot all around the world, giving viewers a chance to see the world through these eight characters. Diversity being portrayed properly is a rarity in many TV shows, but is something that Sense8 appears to do well – without inflicting stereotypes, but instead authenticity. The ardent creators of this show have produced something filled with ludicrous plot twists that will have you on the edge of your seat.
The cast and crew have now completed filming season 2, and it’s due to air its first episode on Christmas Day, with the rest of the season expected to drop in the opening days of the New Year. In the mean time, all 12 episodes from season 1 are currently available to watch on Netflix.
