Label interviewed Union President hopeful, Adam Sellers, in order to find out why he is going for this role, what makes him suited and why we should vote for him to be our next Union President.

Why are you running for this position?

I have been a hall chair and have found that it is something I have enjoyed and feel it is worthwhile. I have enjoyed representing the students at Falk Egg and feel like I would be up for representing the rest of Loughborough. I enjoy it so much and just want to see Loughborough keep getting better and better.

What makes you more suited to the position than other candidates?

I think I am suited because I have had past experience in the Hall Chair side of things, I have been a Sport Sec so I know what it is like organising teams, I have been involved a lot within the union, in nights out and through the day, so I know what students want. I feel I have the ability and skills to lead the next Exec and hopefully be a good president.

Tell us about your campaign theme?

It’s a funny one, it’s not like I’m going to be one person. It’s not like I’m going to be Batman. My theme is the ‘Barmy Army’, so like the England cricket team – it’s their fans. It came about during Freshers week, I remember it was just after the sing off, someone started singing ‘Adam Sellers Barmy Army’, then one of the Freshers picked me up and just started crowd surfing me around Fusion. So I think a lot of first years are going to be quite involved in my campaign, so I thought lets go for that, lets bring back Freshers a bit and get them involved.

In one sentence why should people vote for you?

I am saying if we want to go for something, let’s do it, because the Union has been going steady for so long – yes, let’s go steady if need be, but let’s go better, lets keep on improving and lets try do something new at the same time.

What are you most looking forward to about campaigning?

Meeting new people, I feel that is what I enjoy, having a chat with different people, you never know who is out there and who you’re going to meet, that’s what I am looking forward to.

What parts of campaigning are you going to focus on most?

I’d like to think I will probably have nights out as a focus, but I will be doing lecture halls, dining halls, your general campaign stuff, with maybe a bit of ‘Barmy Army’ stuff at some sports events.

What do you think will be the most challenging part of campaign week?

Sleep, or lack of it. I reckon sleeping and eating, I need to make sure I do a bit of that.

What are you least looking forward to about campaign week?

I’m not looking forward to the lack of sleep, but that’s part of it at the end of the day.

What characteristics do you have that make you well suited to this role?

Being a leader. When my under seventeen’s football manager left we weren’t going to have a team so I said I’ll take it, we used to get a bus and a train to away games because no parents would take us – so yes, leadership.

Confidence. I wouldn’t say I’ll be your 1940’s football manager barking orders at everybody, I would give people respect.

A sense of humour. To keep people happy on those bad days.

What do you like about the way the role has been carried out this year?

To be honest, it’s the same every year, which is another reason I am running for this position. You see what the Executive and President does, but you don’t get to see the ‘nitty gritty’. I have noticed this as a hall chair, you have to take on things yourself that nobody else knows about. I have seen what actual difference you can do if you actually want to do it. But yes, they have done an all right job.

What have you spent your budget on?

I am hopefully going to create some musical things for this campaign. If it all goes well, on a Wednesday when a few sports teams are down, the ‘Barmy Army’ might make an appearance. But budget wise, to be honest, I’m not about sweets – sorry about that! I’d rather speak to people and do it that way. Other things I will spend my budget on are paints – spray paints, posters and t-shirts, wherever else is needed.
