Exec Candidate Steffan Lloyd: All You Need To Know

Steffan is already a recognisable face around campus, holding the position of IMS Chair for the last academic year. He has now decided to progress onto the next level, running for the position of Athletic Union President. If elected, Steffan will focus primarily on strengthening rather than changing the AU. While admitting it is quite a daunting process, Lloyd is looking forward to door knocking and has taken initiative in his campaign through contacting local companies to provide him with materials, as well as saving money through buying from eBay and charity shops. Taking a lot of influence from Jennie Cooper, Steffan is a confident and experienced candidate, here’s what he had to say about running for Exec;
1. Why are you running for this position?
I am running for AU President to make a difference. Cooper has made a big difference this year, and I intend to build and strengthen upon that. She has done a great job, so I think there is no need for change, it just needs to be strengthened and developed and that is the first point of my manifesto.
2. What makes you more suited than other candidates?
I believe I have the experience. I was Sports Sec of Elvyn, so heavily involved within the hall and then I made the progress onto IMS Chair, I have also sat on the HSF Committee and also the AU Exec Committee so I feel I have gained the right experience over the last 2/3 years, and I just thought the next step would be AU President and I am really passionate about it, to represent the Athletic Union. I am also club secretary for the Cricket club as well, so I have that experience too, a broader insight into an AU club and how Loughborough Sport works. People don’t realise that you have My Lifestyle, IMS, the AU and then the Elite, so it has been good to come not just from an AU club but also Loughborough as a whole to get a bigger, clearer picture of it
3. Tell us a bit about your campaign theme
I had a bit of difficulty really. I wanted to get something original like Josh had last year, Josh Do It, which I thought was very original. I had a think about it and over Christmas I just couldn’t come up with anything. The most obvious one to me was Lieutenant Lloyd, because it just went with my name. I thought that if it was army based, everyone has army gear so if I had a social they wouldn’t necessarily have to wear my t-shirts they could just wear their army gear. So I went with that and it bought ideas such as a march, Lieutenant Lloyd’s march around campus, so I can incorporate those kinds of things into the theme and the campaign. I thought it was a good all rounder, maybe not the most original but it is practical
4. What would you say is the most important aspect of your manifesto?
As I said it is not to change too much, Cooper has set a solid foundation. I want to bring in a focus on sponsorship. At the moment it is such a hard task to try and attract sponsorship within the AU, and it shouldn’t be the hard task that it is. We are the most successful student sporting body in Britain, and it is such a hard task at the moment and it shouldn’t be like that. That’s why I want to review a sponsorship position on the Exec, because it requires a set of expertise I think, as you are dealing with tens of thousands of pounds so it does require professional expertise rather than a student
5. In one sentence, why should people vote for you
I am easy to get along with, was voted on as sports sec and IMS Chair so hopefully that means I am easy to work with and have good leadership skills.
