On Friday May 4, Loughborough Football will play their opening fixture at the new Holywell Park Stadium against a Tottenham Hotspur under 20 side.
It will be the first of a series of celebratory fixtures at Loughborough Football’s new home built to fit a capacity of 3,000 on the west side of campus, which also includes a rugby fixture with the Barbarians on May 9.
Former England striker and Tottenham Hotspur Assistant Coach Clive Allen remarked:
“We are delighted to be invited to play in the exhibition match against Loughborough to help celebrate the launch of the new stadium. It really is a fantastic facility and we are very much looking forward to the evening.”
“We will be bringing a side with some of our brightest prospects. It promises to be a great night.”
This will be a welcome moment for the football squad who have enjoyed an extremely successful season so far, winning the Midland Combination North/East League with the university u21s, and are still hoping to add to their trophy cabinet.
Lead by Head Coach of Loughborough Football, Stuart McLaren, the squad are currently through to the League Cup semi-final in the Midlands Alliance and are also at the semi-final stage at the BUCS Championships.
On the fixture news McLaren said:
“It is a fantastic way to open the stadium against one of the top clubs in the Premier League. We are grateful to Tottenham for agreeing to bring up an U20 XI for the showpiece event.
“It really is an exciting time for the club and we are expecting the launch of our new stadium to be a special occasion.”
The new stadium is the icing on the cake after Loughborough Football’s joyous season. In an interview with Label last November McLaren said:
“[I’m] delighted to have the chance to work at an institution like Loughborough with its fantastic reputation and facilities. Many professional clubs would be jealous of what we have to work with here.”
