On September 21, London was graced with a Spring/Summer 2012 men’s collection like no other. As the legion of tall, lean and youthful models began parading the subtle runway, the strike of lazy summer indie tunes commenced.

The clothes that lounged languidly over the toned male torsos could only point towards the one key high-street store that season-upon-season influences the fashion of tomorrow. This is Topman Design S/S ‘12.

Neutral pastel shades with a slice of sunburnt oranges and reds enthused the runway and brought the collection together as a whole. Modern and somewhat grown up slick lined power suits, man bag clutches, and classic brogues tantalised our fashion imaginations as we began pairing them into outfits.

However, despite this pervading sense of maturity, there still remained an element of playfulness that harped our thoughts back to endless school days spent fooling around and dreaming of the future, and reminded us that Topman hadn’t lost it’s touch. Backpacks, short shorts and woollen patterns found their way onto the runway in autumnal hues; burnt red, copper, forest green, brown and black.

Ultimately this collection took us back to the 80’s; anyone not shy of looking like their great aunts curtains and willing to embrace Hugh Heffner’s image by wearing floral, paisley and psychedelic silk lounge sets, will be more than happy with what they will be able to purchase come next spring.

The collection understands that not everyone is this daring, and therefore retains classic and staple designs within the collection. The well-loved classic skinny suit complete with double-breasted jacket still features in Topman, exploring varying tones and fabrics for us to enjoy time after time.

Topman’s S/S ’12 catwalk collection will run alongside the more low-key high street range, so for those intimidated or bemused by the latest looks, there is no need to panic. However, yet again, Topman has provided us with a collection that reflects its London based design team. It is urban, edgy and continuously pushes the boundaries in a subtle yet inspiring way. The print, fabric and the colours all elude a sense of a bohemian summer yet remain sufficiently urban and bang on trend.

It appears that Spring/Summer 2012 is going to be a cool one for Topman-loving guys, so grab your short shorts, the retro specs and the quintessential floral shirt and we’ll be seeing you around.
